  • Mine collapse that killed Shamokin resident Maude Gothie- Tragedy struck a young Shamokin woman on Big Mountain, between Shamokin and Bear Gap, shortly before the turn of the 20th Century. Maude Gothie and Fred Graeber left Shamokon early one afternoon for Bear Gap, where they had dinner. They started their return trip after dark. The carriage was within .5 miles of the Bunker Hill Baseball Complex when the ground parted beneath the carriage. Gothie and Grarber were thrown into the mine collapse......Graeber suffered a compound fracture of the leg and was unable to escape the hole. Graeber said he exposed his open-wound to the cold elements, which froze the blood. By the next morning, searchers found the collapse. Graeber was pulled to safety. When Gothie was recovered it was determined she suffered a broken neck and died rather quickly. A horse and a smashed wagon (seen here) lay nearby. The bottom of the pit where Graeber lay was approximately 35 feet from the surface. Nearby, a smaller opening extended 80 more feet into the mine.
