• St. Edward’s Roman Catholic Church and School- In 1836 a plot of ground was purchased for a Catholic Church near the covered bridge at Cameron Colliery and in the spring a plastered church was erected. In Sept. 1866, Rev. J.J. Koch became the first resident pastor. Shortly after, at a meeting of the parish, it was decided to purchase lots on the corner of Shamokin and Webster streets, and on Christmas of that year the first service was held in a temporary church on Rock Street. In 1872, this church was built of white cut sandstone, which was quarried from the mountains near Shamokin. The church was dedicated by Bishop Shanahan on June 6, 1880. In 1874, a parochial school was opened in the old church with 130 pupils. In 1883, a three-story brick building (seen at right) was built for a school. In 1932, the very high tower was reduced by 100 feet. On April 8, 1971, fire destroyed the steeple and the interior of the church. http://www.daladophotography.com/The-Thomas-Collection/Old-Fire-Fighting/3333623_xc79SC#!i=1321294149&k=cXtPG6C&lb=1&s=A
