At the age of 42, the right-handed pitcher became the first Black person to play in the American League, and was elected into the National Baseball Hall of fame in 1971.

  • (June 1963) This huge rotary drill, right, has found temperatures in some holes southeast of Centralia to be over 2,000 degrees. A mine fire is raging beneath the ground in the area and the drill is digging holes to locate and analyze it. The shovel at left will soon dig a trench to terminate the fire before it spreads to branching veins.
