  • This photo appeared in the 1939 Shamokin Diamond Jubilee booklet. On the back of the photo it reads "Rumberger Family, Shamokin." The caption from the booklet is as follows:  "The best evidence that the bootleg coal industry is not of recent innovation is given in the above replica of of a picture taken during the memorable strike of 1902, when hundreds of people of the Anthracite region went to the coal banks and mine drifts to obtain coal for use in their own homes. The teams shown above were owned by Shamokin business men and others who used them in hauling coal for their homes and business places."

  • Here are personnel of the Shamokin Iron Works founded in 1838 near the site of the Shamokin Dye and Print Works building. Stephen Bittenbender took over management in 1851, when the business began to assume importance. He purchased the machine shops in 1867. The works were leased by Cruikahank and Brothers, who disposed of their interests in Mullen and Hufman in 1870.
