  • Shamokin Academy Grade School- The Academy building, on Arch Street between Grant and Eighth streets, was erected in 1852. It was originally designed for the establishment of a Lutheran seminar. The building was purchased in 1864 by the Shamokin Area School District. In 1913 it was torn down to make way for the Shamokin High School, now called the Norhumberland County Career and Arts Center.

  • (1913) Construction of the Shamokin High School building, now the Northumberland County Career and Arts Center (NCCAC). The building, dedicated in 1915, was used as a high school until 1975 when a new high school opened in the Edgewood section of Coal Township. It was then used as middle school until 1996 when an addition was completed at the high school for middle school students. In 1997, it became the NCCAC. (The Academy Grade School is in the background. It was announced in Sept. of 1981 that the building was to be demolished. It is said that two tunnels once connected the two buildings.)

  • (Early 1978) ...The whole building has controlled climate and lighting. Altemose Construction Company served as the primary contractor. Starting in 1987, doctors began to notice symptoms in several children who attended the school. Parents began to blame poor air quality in the school as the root cause of the illnesses. Although air quality tests showed no connection between the air and the health issues, the district spent over $1 million in 1989 to revamp the entire HVAC system. Several heated, public meetings between parents and administrators were held about the air quality.
