  • Lt. Kenneth Allan, of 228 W. Arch St., Shamokin. Killed in action on March 1, 1945. He was 22. A son of Russel Allen and Ellen Dobmeier, Kenneth was killed in Germany. He enlisted in September 1942 while a student at Bloomsburg State Teachers' College. He was widely known as a drum major with the Shamokin High School and Teachers' College bands, and taught drum majoring at Danville. He trained at Camp Shelby, Fort Sill and Camp Butner.  His final station was Camp Pickett, from which he left the states in Oct. 1944. He had been wounded Dec. 19, 1944, and was awarded the Purple Heart. He returned to front-line duty with his artillery only a month prior his death. A brother, James Morse, 19, was killed in action in Belgium on March 20, 1944. A third brother, Howard Morse Jr., had been reported missing on Sept. 17, 1944. After Howard went missing, Dobmeier had spoken to Kenneth and James about the Army courtesy of allowing the last surviving son to be sent home, but both sons said they wanted to stay in the service and "take up where the other left off." Kenneth is buried at Henri-Chapelle American Cemetery in Belgium. However, there is also a marker in the Shamokin Cemetery.
