  • Glen Burn Mine Fire- This fire has been burning since the 1930's or 1940's. There is currently two mine fires and three culm bank fires. How the fires started is undetermined, but it's believed that the culm from one fire accidentally bypassed a breaker and was sent to the top of the Glen Burn bank. At the moment, there is no plan to extinguish the fires.

  • Excelsior "Mulch" Fire-This fire started in the summer of 2005 on a pile of waste culm that also had yard debris placed on top of it in order to promote vegitation. The fire was believed to be out in December of that year, but the fire and smell returned with a vegence in the summer of 2006. On December 31st, 2007, a third DEP extension has been granted to extinguish the fire. Over 375,000 tons of culm has already been removed fhe site.
