  • Centralia- This well known fire is responsible for taking a population of over 3,000 in the 1960's to a population of just 7 in 2006. In 1963, a fire accidentally started in a dump near the city and quickly spread to a coal vein. Attempts by the city and state to put out the fire were unsuccessful. The state would eventually buy the properties of most, but not all, of the residents of Centralia.
